How to Prepare Your AC for the Warm Weather

As April showers turn to May flowers and the weather continues to heat up, it is crucial that your home is cool and comfortable for your family. Spring is the time to switch your HVAC unit from heating to cooling and you need to make sure your air conditioning is ready. If your AC is not set up for success and operating at peak efficiency, it will struggle to keep your home at the optimal temperature and cost you more on your monthly utility bills. Our team of expert HVAC contractors at Dick Hill and Son is here to help. Not only are we available for professional HVAC maintenance to get your AC working properly, but our team of experienced technicians has compiled a list of helpful tips to ensure your AC unit is prepared for the warm weather.

Change Out Your Air Filter

This should be done every 90 days, so if you have not changed your air filter yet in 2023, do that now! Switching out your air filter is the best way to improve your air quality and keep your air conditioner performing well. When your filter is dirty, your AC has to work harder to push out air which causes your utility bills to rise. Not to mention all the dust, allergens, and other particles that can be spread around your home. This should be the first HVAC maintenance step you make.

Remove Plants and Debris Near AC

When your air conditioner unit is outside, plants and grass can grow around your system. This will hurt its performance and cause potential problems. Make sure to trim the grass, weeds, and plants around your HVAC unit and clear any debris that could obstruct your system’s airflow.

Clean Condenser Unit and Cover When Not Using

Outdoor AC units are built to withstand the elements but are not indestructible. Be sure to cover your condenser when possible to protect against weather, dirt, leaves, and other debris that can clog or damage your unit. Be sure to clean your condenser coils at the beginning of the cooling season to help with more efficient airflow.

Clean Indoor Air Vents

Not only do you need to remember to clean your air filters, but also the vents themselves. Dirt vents will now allow for proper airflow and can result in dust and other particles getting blown around your home.

Test Your AC Unit

Don’t wait until the first heat wave to turn your air conditioner on for the first time. If something goes wrong, you are stuck sweating and needing emergency repairs. If you do have an issue, Dick Hill and Son will do our best to dispatch HVAC contractors to help as quickly as possible, but it is better to test your system before you truly need it. Turn on your unit and make sure it begins to blow cool air within a few minutes and you do not hear any strange noises or abnormalities.
